Offer

Curriculum and major fields of study
Flexible study planning

You can start your Master's degree in the spring and fall semesters. Various forms of study, collaborations and electives offer you the opportunity to plan your studies flexibly and individually, so that there are particularly attractive ways to combine your studies with work or family commitments. We are happy to support you in your individual study planning.

Full-time and part-time

A distinction is made between full-time and part-time studies. The full-time course comprises three semesters with two to two and a half days of attendance at the Universities (Monday to Wednesday lunchtime). If you choose the part-time course, you can complete the modules in a customized sequence. Planning takes place on a rolling semester basis. This allows you to influence the intensity on an ongoing basis. Part-time studies can last up to eight semesters. It is possible to switch from full-time to part-time mode at any time.

Admission and entry requirements

Candidates with the following qualifications are admitted to the Master's program:

  • University of Applied Sciences Bachelor's degree or University of Applied Sciences Diploma in General Social Work, Social Work, Social Work, Social Pedagogy or Socio-Cultural Animation with an overall grade of at least "5" or "C" or a pass in the entrance examination.
  • Bachelor's degree or diploma in a humanities or social science discipline, proof of 1500 hours of practical experience in social work and a pass in the entrance examination.

Proof of exceptional achievements (namely completed continuing education, further training at Universities, scientific publications in specialist journals or proven management experience) can be recognized as a substitute or equivalent for the entrance examination.

Applicants whose first language is not German must provide proof of active language skills at level C2. Applications are accepted on an ongoing basis.

Cooperation with the Protestant Universities of Freiburg im Breisgau and the University of Basel
There is a close cooperation with the Department of Social Work at the Protestant University of Applied Sciences Freiburg im Breisgau (D). Professors from the Protestant Universities are active as module leaders and lecturers in the Master's program. Individual modules are developed jointly. The two Universities also promote student mobility. This means that students from one university can also attend modules at the other university without any administrative hurdles. This gives students the opportunity to choose from a broader range of courses.
This allows students to choose from a wide range of courses, get to know other study locations and cultures and broaden their perspective on social work. The opportunity to take modules at the other Universities also increases flexibility in individual study planning.
The course offered by the Protestant University of Applied Sciences Freiburg im Breisgau (D) is timetabled in such a way that it can be attended not only instead of, but also in addition to the modules at the FHNW School of Social Work (Wednesday afternoon to Friday evening).
The cooperation with the University of Basel enables students of the FHNW School of Social Work to attend the weekly research colloquium at the Institute of Sociology.
