Tipps und Entscheidungshilfen für die Ausbildungswahl

Are you enthusiastic about chemistry and motivated to study chemistry at a university of applied sciences? Do you meet the necessary school requirements (high school diploma / vocational baccalaureate) and do you wish to obtain a bachelor's degree in chemistry? Chemistry is a versatile field of study. As a chemist, you convert various starting materials into new substances. These new substances also have different chemical, physical and biological characteristics. So these are very creative processes and they play a significant part in shaping the future.

Would you also like to take part? What you can do now: Simply take a look at the interesting educational opportunities in the field of natural sciences. Various universities offer sound training courses to become a specialist in chemistry. The numerous chemical processes in nature are of great importance for science. Keep your eye on your goal and start studying chemistry. The combination of theory and practice is very important. Once you have completed the first two semesters of your chemistry degree, you can specialize in either chemistry or biological chemistry. Chemistry provides you with additional specialist knowledge of the classic disciplines of chemistry studies. If you opt for biological chemistry, you will also study the chemical processes in living organisms.

Are you interested in studying chemistry? On the Swiss education platform, Ausbildung-Weiterbildung.ch, you will find numerous educational offers and the relevant contacts, where you can simply ask for additional information.

Questions and answers

It is possible to study chemistry in Switzerland both at Universities of Applied Sciences and at universities. The course is currently offered at three universities of applied sciences: The University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland FHNW; the Zurich University of Applied Sciences ZHF and the Haute école spécialisée de Suisse occidentale HES-SO.

Graduates receive different degrees depending on the Universities at which they study chemistry. For example, the Zurich University of Applied Sciences ZHAW awards the "Bachelor of Science ZFH in Chemistry", while the University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland FHNW awards the "Bachelor of Science in Life Science Technologies" or the "Bachelor of Science in Molecular Life Sciences".

At the FHNW, the Bachelor's degree program in Life Sciences can be chosen in the fields of Bioanalytics and Cell Biology as well as Chemistry. In the Chemistry major, the focus is on the following areas of study:

  • Analytical, bio- and nanoanalytical chemistry
  • Chemical engineering technology
  • Organic and biological chemistry

At the ZHAW, the following specializations can be chosen for chemistry studies:

  • Chemistry
  • Biological chemistry

Depending on the chosen specialization within the chemistry degree course, different content focuses are set, for example in the "Chemistry" specialization at the ZHAW: Industrial Chemistry; Chemical Engineering; Physical Chemistry; Organic Chemistry. The "Biological Chemistry" specialization focuses on the following subjects: Biochemistry; Cell Biology; Microbiology; Bioengineering. The degree program at the FHNW imparts comprehensive knowledge of the scientific fundamentals, the practical fundamentals, communication and entrepreneurship as well as the respective specialization (analytical, bio- and analytical chemistry; organic and biological chemistry; chemical engineering technology). The first specialization covers the topics "Advanced analytical methods, biophysical chemistry; pharmaceutical analysis and applied nanotechnology; analytical chemistry", while the specialization "Organic and biological chemistry" covers the topics organic and physical chemistry, reactions in organic chemistry and biotechnology, organic synthesis and medicinal chemistry; advanced organic chemistry and biocatalysis. The "Chemical Engineering Technology" specialization covers process engineering, process and reaction engineering, chemical process development and MSRT as well as chemical process engineering and modelling.

Chemistry graduates can be found in a wide variety of sectors and areas, for example in biotechnology, the pharmaceutical industry or cosmetics industry, in diagnostics or specialty chemistry, at laboratory equipment manufacturers and in analytical laboratories, in agricultural technology, in plant engineering and process development, at authorities and in consulting. In food chemistry and nanotechnology, in the production of plastics, paints, varnishes or textiles, in research and teaching, chemists have a wide range of career prospects.

The chemistry degree program at the ZHAW and the FHNW can be completed full-time or part-time. However, part-time study is only possible to a very limited extent.
