Data center training: solutions and cloud infrastructures

The data center or data center (RZ for short) is the building or space in which the central accounting technology is housed. It operates the bundled central IT resources. However, the same term is also used to describe the organization that takes care of this infrastructure and ensures the collection, processing and transfer of data. The establishment and operation of a data center is of central importance in the use of IT in companies, administrations or institutions. The increasing use of cloud technologies is reducing the number of such data centers. More and more software today is multi-client capable. If all infrastructure elements within the data center are fully virtualized and integrated and they provide their users with IT services via user-side web interfaces (can go as far as self-service by the end user), they are referred to as cloud data centers.

Data center training provides knowledge about the planning and use of data centers. It shows how IT architecture can be used to achieve a competitive advantage, simplify operations, use cloud computing, solve design difficulties, increase flexibility and reduce costs. Data center courses may include the following topics:

  • Introduction to the topic
  • Inventory with a system
  • Know current IT goals (centralization, consolidation, virtualization, automation and green IT)
  • Building modern data centers: private cloud (infrastructure, server, network, storage), SDN (software-defined networking), OpenStack, multi-cloud
  • Selection and design of server solutions (HP, IBM and Cisco in comparison)
  • Microsoft Windows and Linux/UNIX in the network
  • Concepts for storage networks (NFS, iSCSI, Fibre Channel and FCoE in comparison)
  • Business continuity and service level agreements (SLA)
  • Virtual Desktop Infrastructure (VDI) and thin clients
  • Influence of applications on the design (web applications, Microsoft Exchange & Dynamics, Lotus Notes/Domino, Oracle and SAP in the network)
  • Collaboration solutions
  • WAN and Internet connection
  • Security in the enterprise network, cloud security
  • Integration of cloud services
  • Docker for the isolation of applications through container visualization
  • Kubernetes - Automation of container applications

Data Center courses are aimed at presales staff, sales staff, consultants and decision-makers. Graduates gain more certainty for their planning phase as to how the network can meet future requirements. They will be familiar with a structured approach to planning and will be able to systematically break down the IT network into smaller sub-areas and reassemble them into a holistic solution using a modular principle. Participants will learn how to independently develop a mature network design and put together customized solutions.

Questions and answers

According to the data center definition, a data center is a location or organization for the bundled operation of all central IT resources. This includes the IT infrastructure and IT technology for collecting, processing and forwarding data. In corporate IT, data centers are designed to support business applications and activities (such as email, CRM, ERP, big data, collaboration services, etc.). According to the data center definition, access to the large volumes of data in the data center is guaranteed via a server. The most important components of a data center are routers, switches, firewalls, storage systems, servers and controllers for application provisioning. In addition, a permanent power supply and cooling systems are necessary for data center operation. Data center construction and operation is essential for many companies and their IT systems. Due to the development of cloud computing, however, such an IT center is becoming less important. The data center structure is divided into three organizational units - system technology, system administration and operations. It is also crucial to ensure the best possible data security for the data center. Data Center Management manages the ongoing operation of the data center.

Data center training allows data center technicians to practice the professional handling of data center technology with a coach. Data Center Technician skills are acquired through active participation in the training. Challenges from the everyday life of data center technicians can be specifically practiced in data center training. The correct procedure and implementation can be practiced by doing things yourself under the guidance and assistance of the training instructor. The advantages are as follows:

  • You train as part of a team
  • You receive professional support from the trainer
  • You can learn from mistakes
  • Specific problems from everyday life are dealt with and solved together

Check data center training offers if you work as a data center technician. In addition to the concrete solutions you will receive, you can also build up a good network of contacts.

Data center operators (data center providers) are constantly developing on the Swiss data center market. With over 90 data centers, Switzerland has the second-highest density of data centers in Europe after the Netherlands. However, more than three quarters of data center space (Data Center Switzerland) is located in the Zurich, Geneva and Bern regions. Many new data centers are being planned, and some well-known names such as Datahub Networks and Deltalis have disappeared. The new hyperscalers on the market - one of the data center trends - are also having an impact on the market. This is because not every provider is suitable for the requirements of hyperscalers. Important players in the growing market are Green Datacenter, Oracle, Tineo (formerly Quickline), NTT (incl. E-Shelter), Levantis, Brainserve, Colt and GTT Communications. Increasing cloud migration and rising equipment performance density are seen as important market developments. This is because increasing digitalization requires computing power. However, the country's independence also plays a role in the choice of Switzerland as a location for data centers. This is because Switzerland has its own data protection requirements, which promote sovereignty. However, providers based in this country do not have to comply with the requirements of the European Union, such as the General Data Protection Regulation. A clear advantage of Data Center Switzerland. And yet Data Center Google, for example, does not have its own location in Switzerland. Data center systems must function smoothly, with as little downtime as possible and maximum availability of business applications. To ensure this, Data Center Switzerland also requires proactive monitoring of all units by means of modern data center monitoring.

Data center colocation refers to the service of providing data center space for third parties to operate information technology. In this data center colocation model, the data center is operated in the building of a third-party provider. The terms co-location, server housing and server hosting are also used for this. As a rule, a colocation data center is used by several commercial customers. The data center space provided is supplied with air conditioning, power supply, network connection and security technology. Companies rent space for servers and other IT hardware. Many colocation operators now also offer managed services in order to be able to respond to increased customer requirements. The main reason for choosing a colocation data center is cost. Cloud providers are also increasingly turning to this provisioning option. Disadvantages can be the distance to the colocation data center, if infrastructure has to be manually adapted on site, or long contract terms. In any case, companies should carefully check the service level agreements (SLA) before signing a contract to avoid negative surprises and hidden costs.

A cloud data center means future orientation and more flexibility. Although the path to a cloud data center is challenging, it promises success and sustainability for companies. This is because it creates the basic prerequisites for speed, adaptability and cost efficiency. An individual cloud solution with public cloud, private cloud and hybrid cloud is the ideal concept for this. Because with Cloud Datacenter, companies can:

  • Creating competitive advantages
  • Reduce complexity and costs
  • Accelerate innovation

The number of users, performance, availability and administration are values that companies should check when deciding between data center or cloud (data center vs cloud) as a solution. In terms of scalability, the number of users is often limited with the cloud variant. Admin access is also restricted, as direct access to the database structure, for example, is not possible. Data centers, on the other hand, often incur higher costs for setting up and operating a complex infrastructure. With the data center variant, applications on mobile end devices usually have to be accessed via VPN. The question of "data center vs cloud" therefore cannot be answered in general terms.
Data Center Switch provide scalability, industry-leading automation, programmability and real-time visibility for the hybrid data center.

There are various data center-related professions with different areas of activity. The following are common data center jobs:

  • Data Center Architect
  • Data Center Engineer
  • Data Center Technician
  • Data Center Manager
  • Data center specialist
  • Data Center Systems Specialist
  • Data Center Production Planner
  • Data Center Security Engineer
  • Product Developer Infrastructure Data Center
  • Datacenter System Engineer
  • Data Center & Cloud Manager
  • Data Center Maintenance Manager

Modern data centers are now very different from previous data centers. The infrastructure has been converted from conventional local physical servers to virtual networks (data center network). Data center vs server has clear advantages, as the data center network can support applications and workloads in various physical infrastructures and in multicloud environments. Nowadays, data is located in several data centers, at the edge, in public and private clouds. These components are networked with each other, as the data center must be able to communicate across multiple locations (on-site and in the cloud). The public cloud is also a collection of data centers. These are clear advantages of "data center vs server" and clearly speak in favor of a data center network. When applications are hosted in the cloud, they use data center resources from cloud providers. Data center migration is flexible and usually enables an independent switch to data centers and a non-clustered architecture.

With data center virtualization, virtualized data centers are created by virtualizing networking, storage and security. The rack (data center racks) in which the components are installed ensures order in the physical area of servers, among other things. But even in the data center, it may be sufficient to choose the "standard edition" (according to Data Center vs Standard) in individual cases if the number of devices and users is not exceeded. This is because it is often possible to switch to the data center quickly and easily at a later date. The four quality levels of a data center include availability, single point of failure and heat dissipation performance through data center tiers (Tier 1 to 4). The tier standard as a classification guarantees the master class with regard to these measured criteria at the highest level, Tier 4.
