Tipps und Entscheidungshilfen für die Ausbildungswahl

Operational maintenance specialists are responsible for the smooth functioning of all facilities in buildings. They work wherever large buildings and facilities require ongoing maintenance, such as public administrations, companies, factories, schools, institutions, hospitals, sports centers, work yards and many more. There they take on all maintenance and cleaning tasks for the entire site in the buildings as well as in the surrounding area. Depending on the size of the site and the facilities, they do this together with a team or on their own. The training can be completed with a focus on building services or plant services. While housekeeping specialists tend to take on tasks in the buildings, employees specializing in maintenance are more likely to work outdoors. During the further training course in operational maintenance for adults, participants acquire comprehensive know-how in the areas of garden maintenance, waste management and cleaning buildings and their surroundings or outdoor facilities.

Specialists in operational maintenance with a focus on building services independently replace minor defective parts such as seals, lamps or door locks when necessary. They are responsible for all technical building systems and take responsibility for their maintenance. They can also carry out minor repair work independently. In the event of more extensive damage or major renovations, they organize specialists and coordinate their assignments.

Specialists in operational maintenance with a focus on plant services carry out structural maintenance and can repair damage to buildings and outdoor facilities independently. They maintain green areas, driveways, footpaths and roads, clear snow and repair damage to flooring.

They maintain and clean the various tools, machines and vehicles that the plant maintenance specialists operate independently and can also carry out simple repairs on them themselves.

The specialist in operational maintenance training can be completed after secondary school during a three-year apprenticeship. It is interesting to note that the further education course for adults is also available in a shortened form. This means that anyone who already has several years of professional experience in caretaking has the opportunity to obtain the Federal Certificate of Competence in just two years while working. This shortened course is also open to people with limited knowledge of German (level B1). You can find non-binding offers from schools via the education portal Ausbildung-Weiterbildung.ch.

Questions and answers

One of the criteria for admission to the specialist in operational maintenance apprenticeship is a good command of written and spoken German at level B1 or higher.

As soon as you have obtained the Federal Diploma of Vocational Education and Training (EF) in accordance with Art. 32 BBV after completing your training as a specialist in operational maintenance, it makes no difference whether you obtained this qualification as a young person or as an adult in a catch-up course. The requirements are identical, but require previous professional experience.

By the time they take their final examination, not by the time they start their training as a maintenance specialist, apprentices must have at least 2 years of professional experience as a janitor and 3 years of general professional experience.

The specialist in operational maintenance training lasts 2 years as catch-up training with a Federal Diploma of Vocational Education and Training (VET Diploma) until the qualification procedure (final apprenticeship examination - LAP). Lessons take place alongside work. Some lessons take place in the evenings and at weekends to avoid loss of earnings.

The Federal VET Diploma in Operational Maintenance comprises a total of 1088 lessons, which are divided into 360 lessons of general education and 128 lessons of practical instruction. The remaining lessons provide theoretical knowledge on topics such as work organization, occupational safety, health protection, environmental protection, green maintenance work, waste management, cleaning work, repairs, structural maintenance and inspection and maintenance work.
