How long does further training in Building Technology HF (formerly Technician HF Building Technology) take and how much does it cost?

Duration and procedure

  • The Building Technology HF courses are designed to be taken part-time.
  • They have a modular structure and last 6-8 semesters.
  • Depending on the model, lessons take place on a weekday plus Saturday, on Saturdays only or on two evenings per week.
  • The HF Building Technology courses comprise at least 3600 learning hours for persons with a relevant Federal Certificate of Competence (EFZ), and at least 5400 learning hours for persons with another EFZ.
  • The learning hours are divided into the following educational components:
    • Contact studies (traditional classroom teaching, laboratory, supervised group work, formative learning assessments, etc.)
    • Guided self-study (exercises, tutorials, research assignments, practical tasks, reading assignments, etc.)
    • Individual self-study (preparation and follow-up work, exam preparation, general study time, etc.)
    • Practical experience (practical experience of at least 50% in a relevant field of activity)
    • Internships (practical work on projects, internship in a real field of work, etc.)
    • Qualification procedures (semester and interim examinations, graded term papers, diploma examination, diploma thesis)
  • The courses are now offered on site as well as online and hybrid teaching and blended learning. The "Building Services Engineering" framework curriculum provides for at least 500 hours of classroom instruction for people with a relevant EFZ and at least 700 hours without a relevant EFZ.
  • In order to complete the HF program to become a certified building technician HF (formerly technician HF building technology), a diploma thesis must be written and/or a diploma examination must be passed. The implementation and design of the requirements is the responsibility of the schools and can therefore vary.

Costs

  • The course fees amount to CHF 17,400 - CHF 29,100.
  • The examination fee or costs for the diploma thesis and diploma examination are generally included in the course fees.
  • Many universities of applied sciences offer preliminary courses (e.g. in mathematics), some of which are compulsory and must be completed before starting your studies. You can expect to pay between CHF 690-900 for these courses.
  • Some providers charge additional costs for the registration fee, teaching materials, other materials, media support, licenses, printing costs, excursions or project weeks.
