Tipps und Entscheidungshilfen für die Ausbildungswahl

Designing and developing machines, systems and architecture is the main task of a technician in the field of construction and design. A CAD course (computer-aided design) will teach you the basics of technical drawing as well as the production of models. These models can be used to carry out tests and simulations and thus determine the opportunities and risks for the buildings.

Are you already advanced in the field of construction and would you like to complete the higher technical college to become a construction technician (HF)? With this training or further training, you will be working in the middle management of a company and carrying out challenging and varied tasks. Project management and leading a team are just as much a part of your job as planning and monitoring projects.

As a design technician, you are in contact with engineers on the one hand and technical workers on the other. You also respond to the wishes of customers and try to reconcile their concerns with your specialist knowledge and the technical and economic possibilities.

Take a step forward in your professional life! Find suitable schools for your training, whether it's a course of study or a degree at a higher technical college. The Swiss education portal provides you with numerous offers on the subject of construction.

Note: Since fall 2022, the HF technician courses (formerly "Techniker HF Fachrichtung") have been given a separate framework curriculum and a new title for each specialization. For example, the course "Technician HF Mechanical Engineering" is now called "Mechanical Engineering Technician HF". In addition, the specializations have been abolished.

Questions and answers

In order to register for a CAD course, such as AutoCAD: Fundamentals 2D, you already need basic knowledge of design or technical drawing and, of course, basic PC skills. For the diploma course at a College of Higher Education, you do not necessarily need to already be able to design.

A basic mathematics course is not mandatory for enrolment on the course in design engineering or for the diploma technician HF mechanical engineering, specializing in design engineering, but it is highly recommended if you completed your apprenticeship a few years ago or if you do not have a vocational secondary school diploma.

Training to become a qualified technician in mechanical engineering, specializing in construction technology (new: mechanical engineering technician HF) requires basic vocational training with a federal certificate of competence (EFZ) in the metal, electrical or mechanical engineering industry or a related field, which provides you with the basic knowledge required for this further training in construction. You can request the detailed admission requirements directly from the higher technical colleges.

The design engineering course at a College of Higher Education is very broad and comprises a total of 29 subjects, as well as term papers and a diploma thesis. Within the subjects, the main focus is on mathematics (with 200 lessons) and physics (with 120 lessons), but design engineering (75 lessons), fluid technology (70 lessons) as well as electrical engineering, business administration, machine elements, drive and gear technology (60 lessons each) also make up a large part of the course. A detailed list of the subjects and the number of classroom lessons can be obtained directly from the Universities.
