Mental training is a special form of training because it takes place "only in the mind": Sequences of movements and actions are carried out in your mind, critically observed and improved where possible. In this way, sequences can be mentally practised and optimized and then physically put into practice more effectively.
Surely you know situationsin which you wish you had reacted differently. You repeat the situation over and over again in your mind afterwards and imagine how you should or would have reacted. There is nothing you can do to change the past situation. But you can trust it: In a similar situation, you may now respond the way you would have liked to the first time, because you have mentally rehearsed the situation a little.
Mental training was originally developed to support sport. It is widely used in popular and competitive sports. Today, however, mental training is used in many areas, e.g. in music to rehearse new pieces, in management to prepare for meetings and in the area of personal counseling to quit smoking or prepare for exams.
Mental trainers work with individuals or groups and mentally train them in the desired processes and situations.
The training takes the form of conversations supported by visualizations and other aids. It is based on psychological and neuroscientific theories and methods. Depending on the provider and target group, additional insights are incorporated, e.g. from sports psychology or spiritual traditions.
