Finally learn Spanish fluently: language travel to Spain makes it possible

Questions and answers

There are several ways in which you can learn Spanish quickly and effectively during a language study trip to Spain without having to miss out on a varied leisure program. Many language schools in Spain offer intensive courses or combination courses, which offer you a higher course frequency than conventional standard courses. Intensive courses usually have around 30 language lessons per week, spread over five days. You can often also choose the "small group" option so that you only learn with a small number of fellow students and can therefore be challenged more intensively. Combination courses consist of group courses and individual lessons, which promises you a high degree of individual support, as you can discuss and revise everything you have learned in the course with a teacher in private. Special emphasis is also placed on oral communication in such individual courses, which helps you to quickly and confidently master the sometimes difficult Spanish pronunciation. The advantage of a combination course is that, in addition to intensive one-to-one tuition, you can still learn in a group and thus maintain contact with like-minded people. This social component should not be underestimated, as speaking Spanish before and after lessons is one of the biggest advantages that language travel to Spain offers you in contrast to language courses in Switzerland. Individual lessons are certainly more effective than a combination course when it comes to learning Spanish, but you should make sure that you choose accommodation where you can also practise speaking in your free time, for example with a host family or in a shared flat. Apartments and hotels are not recommended for quick language success. A very interesting and profitable way of learning the language is to take part in a language course.
On youth language trips, language students usually stay either with host families or in a student residence that is attached to the school and is supervised around the clock. The rooms are occupied by several students and therefore offer less privacy than rooms with host families, but also more opportunities for social contact with peers from all over the world. A disadvantage of student residences or halls of residence is certainly that there are often many Germans, Swiss and Austrians present, and although the schools try to ensure the best possible mix of nationalities when allocating rooms, the language students usually group together with people who speak the same language in order to communicate better. The learning effect is therefore less than with a Spanish host family, where you or your child is forced to speak Spanish.

Language study trips to Spain for adults usually offer a slightly larger selection of accommodation than language study trips for students. Host families are also offered here, as are student residences, although these are not supervised at all times for this age group. Meals are also not provided in student residences; language students are usually self-catering or can at least have breakfast in the adjoining cafeteria (not always available). Shared apartments are also offered, where students share the common rooms of an apartment and live in either a single or double room. In most cases, care is taken to ensure that you live in an apartment with people of other nationalities in order to speak as much Spanish as possible. You can also learn Spanish quickly in a host family where your host father or mother is also your Spanish teacher and you have a single room "at the teacher's home". Hotels, studios or apartments are less suitable for contact with other students.

There are language schools that make a rough classification of the language course before the students arrive. This is only possible if each participant completes a language test in advance to determine their language level. This is done either online or by letter, so that the language school has the opportunity to put the language students together with equally "strong" or "weak" students. This creates a homogeneous group that enables the best possible language acquisition, as there are fewer over- or underchallenges regarding the learning material. Often, however, such a placement test for Spanish is only carried out on site on the first day of the course and the groups are then divided up. This option has the advantage that all acquired language skills can be taken into account, including those that have been acquired in the weeks before the language stay, for example. As a rule, however, you can also change courses if you find yourself in a Spanish course that does not correspond to your language level and can be upgraded or downgraded. You can do this both at the beginning and during the course. However, as this is not always possible at all language schools in Spain, you should definitely enquire about this point before booking.
The DELE exams for the Diplomas de Español como Lengua Extranjera at levels A2 to C2 have fixed exam dates, which take place in spring and fall. For this reason, the preparation courses for the individual DELE exams are also offered exclusively around these dates for language trips to Spain in order to give participants the opportunity to test their acquired knowledge straight away. You can therefore expect these diploma preparation courses to start at the end of April and the end of October and last around 4 weeks, depending on the language school. However, the duration of the language course can vary, so you should always check this with the individual language schools in Spain.
