Language schools in England: learning English made easy.

It is almost impossible to get by on vacation abroad without sufficient knowledge of English. Of course, the same is true in professional terms: In many industries, knowledge of English is a prerequisite for getting a job in the first place.

This is why more and more students are going abroad for a period of time during the vacations or after leaving school. In this case, language schools in England are an excellent way to learn the accent-free British that many companies expect.

However, language schools in England are also becoming increasingly popular with adults who are planning to change careers or further their education, who are looking for a change of pace or want to combine their vacation with a meaningful activity. As well as making it easier to learn a foreign language, you can make new contacts and visit places of interest.

Find out in detail before you book. On Ausbildung-Weiterbildung.ch you will find various providers from whom you can request documents without obligation. Compare them carefully and then decide which school is right for you.

Questions and answers

In recent years, the demand for school language courses has risen sharply, so that there are many language schools in England that offer language courses for children and young people from the age of 7. However, this early age limit is only found at very few language schools, usually a minimum age of 12 years is required, which is also highly recommended from a pedagogical point of view, as in many offers the teaching staff only speak English and rely on a certain maturity of the language students. Children aged 7 to 10 can often become very homesick if they do not have a caregiver who does not speak their mother tongue and are also traveling alone, without a friend or sibling. If you are planning to send your child on a language study trip to England, it makes sense to reconsider this option and find out about other alternatives, such as language camps in Germany, Austria or Switzerland, where German is spoken and the majority, if not all, of the students speak German. Although this reduces the learning effect, it will certainly make a younger child feel more relaxed away from home. Many first-class language schools in England offer language trips for young people aged 12 and over, which include a language course and various attractive leisure activities. Special offers are also available that combine a language course with a specific activity, such as English and tennis, English and golf or English and rugby.
In addition to conventional business language courses, which train you in general business English, more and more language schools in England are also offering you the option of industry-specific training. This means that in such a language course you will learn important phrases, technical terms and abbreviations for your industry that cannot be covered in a standard business course. The industries or specific professional groups for which business courses are offered vary depending on the language school. However, you will often find courses in the following areas:
  • Law
  • Banking and finance
  • IT
  • Marketing
  • Medicine and healthcare
  • Gastronomy and tourism
  • SecretariatEngineering
  • Human Resources
Of course, language courses are also offered specifically for the fields of logistics, customer service, real estate, insurance, the public sector, pharmaceuticals and many more, so that you will usually find the language course that is just right for you. However, if this is not the case and you cannot find a language school in England offering a suitable course, you can opt for one-to-one tuition where you can learn exactly what you need for your job with a qualified language teacher. The learning content is specially tailored to your personal needs and prepared so that you can achieve maximum learning success in the shortest possible time. You can attend these language lessons either in a language school or in the teacher's home, depending on what suits your preferences best.
How much money you have at your disposal during your language study trip in England and how much you need depends very much on your financial situation and your personal wishes. People who like to do a lot, want to visit every museum, plan excursions at the weekend and are not averse to going to the pub in the evening will of course need far more pocket money than others who prefer to take it easy and spend their free time studying with their host family or in the school residence. Always bear in mind that your pocket money should be money that you have at your disposal, so you don't have to use it to buy your meals or bus tickets. These costs should be calculated separately in your budget. For pocket money to the UK, you can expect to pay around 120 British pounds per week, which is equivalent to around 180 Swiss francs (as of August 2014). For a language study trip to London, however, you should expect to spend much more, approximately GBP 200, or around CHF 300 per week. If this seems too high, consider looking for language schools in England that are located outside of London in a more affordable region and take a day trip to the British capital.
Most language schools in England offer a variety of different language courses from which you can choose exactly the right course for you. As a rule, these are standard courses and intensive courses, which differ mainly in the number of lessons per week. In addition, combination courses are often offered, which consist of individual lessons and a standard course and therefore usually have around 5 more lessons per week than conventional standard courses. One-to-one lessons are of course also possible, in which the scope and content are tailored to your requirements and you are guaranteed the teacher's full attention. In addition, most language schools in London, Cambridge, Manchester, Liverpool, Bristol, Birmingham or one of the many other interesting cities offer business courses that focus on general business English, but are also increasingly designed for specific professional groups and sectors, such as English for lawyers, English for medical professionals, English for secretaries, etc. You can also find combination courses consisting of language courses and leisure courses at some language schools in England, such as English and cooking, English and golf or English and surfing. However, you can attend Cambridge preparation courses at almost every language school in the UK, which will prepare you for all conceivable Cambridge examinations, such as the FCE, CAE or CPE. IELTS preparation courses are also usually offered, as are courses for Business English certificates. English language schools also often offer special courses that focus on conversation, literature or travel and tourism. In addition to these course models, which you can find at language schools in England, more and more language travel agencies are also offering you the opportunity to learn English directly with a teacher at home.
It's best to start planning your language study trip to England early in order to clarify all important questions, find the right language school and the right language course and still have a large selection of accommodation to choose from. Especially in the summer months, many language schools in England are quickly fully booked, especially the diploma preparation courses, and coveted accommodation, for example near the school or directly in the city, is also quickly snapped up. In this case, early means several months before the course starts. It is best to start your preparation by deciding in which city you would like to attend an English course. Once you have decided on a city, consider the following:
  • How long do I have for a language course?
  • What is my budget?
  • How many hours a week do I want to attend a language course?
  • What is the maximum number of participants in a language course with me?
  • Would I like to obtain a language diploma?
  • Do I want to learn something specific, for example in business courses?
  • What would I like to be able to do in my free time?
  • How big should the language school be?
  • Which type of accommodation do I prefer?
Then request offers from the relevant language schools in England and compare their services, quality and prices. Seemingly inexpensive providers often have a number of additional costs for teaching materials, transfers, registration fees, etc. It makes sense to acquire some basic language skills before your language study trip to England and be sure to pack a dictionary. Also think about travel cancellation and international health insurance as well as cash already changed for the trip.
