Petra Schnegg-Mann: New methods for even better training & consulting activities

As soon as her children started school, the qualified freight forwarding agent really got going. For eight years, she focused entirely on her children and put her career on the back burner. That was exactly the right decision, she thought at the time and still thinks so today. And it was also exactly the right decision to return to work after this time. She had previously worked in export for six years, where her responsibilities included export processing worldwide as well as export controls and export licenses from the US and Swiss authorities.

After her parental leave, she initially worked part-time in import and export, took a detour into marketing support for two years and finally ended up in the "Export and Sales Administration Latin America, Asia, Near & Middle East" function. She supplemented her excellent language skills in English and French with a Spanish diploma for her work with Latin America, so that Petra Schnegg-Mann is now fluent in four languages.

Career advancement thanks to further training

Not only this further training, but also many others, such as team leader with management responsibility in the commercial sector, FOCA security officer, specialist topics such as export control & sanctions, risk management, contract law in export and Incoterms 2020 trainer, helped her to make a steep career rise.

Giving the first training

In 2008, Petra Schnegg-Mann moved to HaslerRail AG in Bern and gave her first employee training course in the area of export. She quickly realized that not only did she find giving training courses easy and enjoyable, but that employees, trainees, customers and suppliers could also derive real and directly applicable benefits from her knowledge.

It hails awards

Over the next few years, Petra Schnegg-Mann sought out jobs where she had the opportunity to take part in training, becoming an examiner for the Swiss Federal Examinations in Foreign Trade HFP and BP as well as a BP Import & Export Board Member. She expanded her consulting activities from 2014 onwards and ultimately became Foreign Trade Manager Process Automation Business Area via a position as Team Leader Transport, Trade & Logistics and Senior Financial Advisor Export & Trade Finance / Sensitive Countries Advisory. She received awards for "Outstanding Execution and Constant Support of Teams for Projects in Armenia and Iran 2017" and for "Outstanding Contribution Iran Wind Down 2018", worked hard and also became a board member of Swiss Shippers' Council in Lausanne in 2020.

Anyone who has already achieved so much in their life surely doesn't need any more training, you might think. Need it? No. Want to? Absolutely.

Receive new input

And so, in 2021, Petra Schnegg-Mann began the SVEB course instructor course (now SVEB trainer), the first module of the federal certificate for SVEB trainers. But why actually? "I decided to take the SVEB 1 further training course in order to underpin my years of experience in training and consulting with new aspects and methods. New input is always helpful. I also enjoy imparting knowledge and contributing to the expansion of skills. Problem- and solution-oriented support and further training are important to me. What's more, it also contributes to my personal development," says Petra Schnegg-Mann.

Implement what you have learned directly

The further training for the SVEB certificate is an enrichment for her, because even though she already has many years of experience as a consultant and trainer, Petra Schnegg-Mann really appreciates the content taught. She has already become acquainted with many new and interesting teaching and learning methods and can continue to deepen her skills in training design.

She can implement these inputs directly and integrate them into her training and consulting services in foreign trade, which she intends to expand further in the future. "I will be able to restructure my future training courses and consultations and add valuable aspects. What I have learned will also help me to communicate the benefits of training and consulting to potential target audiences in an even more targeted way."

Equipped with the SVEB 1, all her experience, further training, know-how and talent, it will be easy for Petra Schnegg-Mann, as a foreign trade expert in an internationally active company, to incorporate her practical skills into her training and consulting and to promote others professionally.

Christoph Wüst: SVEB course instructor, federally certified businessman DD, federally certified sales manager, graduate of CAS SME Management

Christoph Wüst: The managing director who passes on his expertise as a lecturer

Christoph Wüst has already achieved a great deal in his life and has had a career that many can only dream of. As managing director of an innovative Swiss wholesale SME, the trained salesman and retail employee was extremely successful for many years. He worked his way up from Product Manager to the overall management of the company with 50 employees and an annual turnover of around CHF 18 million.

Wüst's greatest successes included the market-oriented restructuring of the business into a company operating on the free market, the overall increase in sales of around 30%, the steady improvement in the equity ratio and balance sheet structure as well as the acquisition and establishment of major customers.

And when you look at the facts, you can see why Wüst is a little proud of his achievements and why he has risen continuously in the company for over 20 years.

Isn't something missing?

But at one point, Christoph Wüst had had enough. He had achieved a lot at his long-standing employer, Max Bersinger AG in St. Gallen, and yet he kept getting the feeling that he wanted to do something else. Working in the education sector, for example. Although he was responsible for business management topics as an adult educator at the company, that wasn't enough for him. He wanted to lecture.

He had already done this once for a few years, from the turn of the millennium. Back then, he was still Head of Marketing and an authorized signatory, a member of the management team, but not yet solely responsible for the budget and results. He had a little more time in those years. Time that he used to pass on his knowledge to others.

In 2000, a year after he had completed his further training to become a federally certified sales manager, he was offered a position as a lecturer in organization, sales planning and marketing concepts at the BVS vocational and administration school in St. Gallen. For five years, he taught students alongside his main job as a marketing manager and enjoyed the change of pace. "My passion is to inspire people, support them and pass on knowledge," says Wüst to this day.

When there is not enough time

However, there was no time left for this teaching activity in his new position as Managing Director and so he gave up teaching. For the time being. Even though several years had passed since he last taught, and Wüst himself had attended a number of courses and seminars, including the CAS in SME Management at the University of St. Gallen, the thought of teaching never completely left him.

Rethinking life

In 2020, he therefore decided to rethink his life. And he came to the conclusion that he would now use his wealth of experience both in adult education as a lecturer or coach and as an SME consultant in the business world. Students and companies should be able to benefit from his practical expertise in the future. "This creates an ideal symbiosis for me, combining the two worlds in a beneficial way," says Christoph Wüst.

So he quit his job and completed various further training courses in 2020, for example in conflict management, leadership and coaching, quality management and the SVEB certificate. Further training in "resource-oriented" coaching is to follow shortly.

The SVEB certificate as an introduction

However, he has already benefited from the SVEB certificate. On the one hand, of course, in terms of content, especially for content analysis, material reduction and detailed planning, but also the LWO webinar "Technology - Devices - Tools", which dealt with the infrastructure of online teaching.

Secondly, this further training enabled him to become a lecturer at the ZbW in the subject of "Marketing, Sales and Customer Service", which he has been doing since April 2021. Christoph Wüst would now like to gradually expand his teaching activities, preferably in the areas of business administration, marketing & sales and coaching (case study training, learning process support, job application coaching).

Future plans and founding a company

In order to complete his dream and become a successful SME consultant, Wüst is planning to set up his own company "Wüst & Partner" and is putting a lot of energy into reconciling his two professional passions. Sharing his expertise with an interesting company on a part-time basis is also an option.

He certainly has the support of his family. And enough willpower, experience, success stories and motivation anyway.

When you look at Sven Müller's extensive skills and experience, you might ask yourself why you still need further training. Do you really still need the SVEB certificate as a course instructor (now trainer) to progress professionally?

Not necessarily, actually. But the trained typographer EFZ, tourism businessman EFZ and communication planner with a federal certificate deliberately chose this course in order to expand his specialist knowledge and to be able to use it specifically in adult education and individual coaching in the future. Because this is precisely where Sven Müller's strength lies: in communication.

Corine Estoppey: Watchmaker with a federal certificate as an instructor

As a trained watchmaker, Corine Estoppey worked at Audemars Piguet for three years after completing her training, but was soon looking for a new challenge. She found this in her training as a tour guide and a professional activity in this field, which took her out of her "world reduced to a few square centimeters", as she says herself. At the same time, however, she continued to work as a watchmaker on a self-employed basis from home. The offer to work in adult education at a small private school and to impart her knowledge as a watchmaker to adults who were thinking of entering the industry, as well as to managers and sales staff who wanted to learn more about the subject, opened up new career opportunities for her.

She completed the SVEB 1 certificate and began the course to become an instructor with a federal certificate, which she will complete at the end of 2017. Estoppey found fulfillment as the technical and pedagogical director of all watchmaking courses and was able to participate in the further development of her students. This work gave her great pleasure, especially when she was able to explain complicated processes in a way that everyone could understand.

In 2016, as the crisis in the Swiss watch industry worsened, Corine Estoppey decided to train in a completely different field - as a Pilates instructor. So she was prepared when she had to give up her job as a self-employed watchmaker at the beginning of 2017 and also lost her job in adult education. She took over a few Pilates classes, which now number 11, and has a temporary job in logistics.

Also great personal benefit

However, she hopes that she will soon be able to work as a trainer again, preferably in watchmaking. However, she is also open to other things. For example, she is considering further training in supervision or group dynamics, as a coach or mentor. Graduating as a certified trainer could open new doors for Estoppey, as she was able to expand her skills in many areas during the course. In addition to the content of Module 2, she also benefited from the transfer of knowledge and its application on feedback, learning types, communication, media use and perception, which are not only very helpful to her professionally, but also personally, especially in the areas of communication and crisis management.

Markus Müller: His future lies in adult education

As a trained structural draughtsman, Markus Müller has worked in the media industry to this day, where he has worked as a polygrapher, as a clerk and in VID. Thanks to continuous training in IT and organizational management as well as further training as a management specialist with the ifks-HWD diploma, he now has 12 years of management experience and is responsible for managing all of the canton's office materials as a clerk at the Solothurn cantonal printing materials administration. His wide-ranging responsibilities include purchasing and internal order processing for office materials, advising cantonal offices on technical and design matters relating to the purchase of printed materials and working with external design companies and printers.

Since 2017, Markus Müller has also been employed as a lecturer at a language school, where he teaches German to foreign-language adults on a part-time basis. This activity also sparked his interest in further training in adult education, which prompted him to complete the SVEB course instructor certificate (now SVEB instructor), the first stage on the path to becoming an instructor with a federal certificate.

Keeping an eye on the next career steps during further training

The variety of methods that Markus Müller was able to get to know during his training impressed him the most, mainly due to the large number of different lecturers. "During the course at the LWO, the various instructors inspired me time and again and stimulated my creative thinking," says Müller. The preparation of the daily responsibilities, the implementation of creative ideas and the presentation of the learning material during the course gave him great pleasure and the positive feedback from the course instructors and the group confirmed that he had found his calling in adult education.

The knowledge and skills acquired during the SVEB1 training course will enable Markus Müller not only to give one-and-a-half-hour German lessons in future, but also to design and lead full-day courses himself. A first step in this direction has already been taken. He was still looking for new challenges during his further training. From 2018, Müller will be able to work for the cantonal administration as a lecturer and training course leader, as well as an examiner for the canton of Solothurn. An additional role as head of training for basic commercial training may arise from his position as PEX.

In order to achieve all this and to be able to work 100% as a training manager at some point, Markus Müller plans to obtain a federal certificate as a trainer and to professionalize his training activities.

Thomas Wenk, mechanic, instructor, SVEB-certified course instructor and senior caregiver

Thomas Wenk: Re-entry into trainer and project assistance activities

Continuous professional development is a matter of course for Thomas Wenk and has accompanied the trained mechanic in mechanical engineering for over 40 years. To date, he has completed 22 further training courses, from "Fundamentals of industrial electronics" and "Automation" to "Concrete, mortar as a building material", length testing technology and "Communication and rhetoric" to "Force measurement chain - from sensor to software" and finally "SVEB1 course instructor" (now "SVEB1 instructor") at Lernwerkstatt Olten.

Thomas Wenk also changed companies from time to time in his early years: he rebuilt mechanically complex systems and was entrusted with the commissioning of weaving machines at Sulzer in Winterthur, trained apprentices in mechanical engineering at Brown Boveri at the Oerlikon plant, obtained his master craftsman's certificate, was responsible for the maintenance and modernization of the control laboratory and the CNC production machines as a test mechanic in the mechanical engineering department at the University of Applied Sciences in Basel, where he gave lessons and assisted in the measurement and control technology laboratory, until he finally moved to the Institute of Civil Engineering at the University of Applied Sciences, where he remained for a proud 18 years. There, Thomas Wenk gave experimental lessons, carried out measurement and testing assignments for industry and was responsible for the quality of the entire laboratory operation. He was responsible for the maintenance, renewal and expansion of the laboratory facilities.

After a short stint as a technical service employee, followed by several years of family work and currently working as a senior care worker in Bern, Thomas Wenk is now drawn back to teaching. In 2017, he therefore completed the SVEB certificate course for course instructors and is now aiming to become self-employed in training and project assistance. "Without the SVEB 1 certificate, it would be inconceivable to return to training and project assistance work," says Wenk, whose aim is to provide feedback and evaluate lesson design by observing training sequences, create teaching and learning materials for training courses in the technical field and also act as a teacher if required. In addition, he would like to develop feasible projects based on renewal intentions and ensure their realization. In doing so, he combines the specialist areas of measurement and control technology, mechanics, statics, hydrodynamics, materials science and electrical engineering on a case-by-case basis. Measuring and testing tasks are also part of my job requirements.

Thomas Wenk found the ARIVA model, the taxonomy levels, the didactic reduction of material and the eight steps of the andragogical process particularly useful during the SVEB course.

Michael Steiner: Towards the next career step with the SVEB course instructor certificate (now SVEB instructor certificate)

Michael Steiner began his professional career with vocational training as an electromechanic and quickly continued his education. First with a degree in electrical engineering FH, then with a postgraduate degree in business engineering FH. He completed a Swisscom talent training course at the international institute of management in technology (iimt) at the University of Fribourg and then decided to study for an Executive MBA in General Management at the University of St. Gallen (HSG), where he wrote his master's thesis on the search for and recruitment of specialists and managers.

And this is precisely the field in which Michael Steiner is active today. As a partner, shareholder and Chairman of the Board of Directors of GMP AG, the father of two has extensive specialist and management expertise in personnel and organizational development. In addition to the search for and recruitment of specialists and managers, his work also focuses on change management, outplacement and newplacement, skills development for specialists and managers as well as the diagnosis and assessment of individuals, teams and company divisions.

With over 25 years in various management positions in the private sector, family businesses, public companies and global corporations, Michael Steiner has extensive experience in the fields of retail, medical technology, services, IT and telecommunications, energy technology and plant and mechanical engineering.

He wants to share his professional success in the future and qualify as a lecturer at a higher technical college (HF) or technical school. Andrea Müller, social worker and course instructor with SVEB certificate

Andrea Müller: Enthusiastic adult educator in the social sector has completed the course "SVEB Certificate Course Leader" (now trainer)

Andrea Müller originally opted for a completely different sector, namely the construction industry, where she began her apprenticeship in the early 1990s. She trained as a metal construction draughtswoman and also worked as a projector, customer advisor, CAD training manager and calculator until she realized after 10 years that her heart wasn't quite in the construction industry. And so she reoriented herself, began a six-month internship as a socio-cultural animator at a project start-up center, took a 60% job as a youth worker in Muri and finally completed a degree at the University of Applied Sciences for Social Work in Zurich. During her part-time studies, Andrea Müller completed several internships, first as a social worker at the Swiss Federation of the Blind and then as a school social worker in Olten.

As a qualified social worker, she set up counseling centers in two elementary school in Dietikon and in the district school in Aarau. There she developed and established topic-specific prevention services, carried out crisis interventions and solution-oriented counseling sessions. She also enjoyed speaking and moderating at major events, conferences and parent events.

While working in school social work, Andrea Müller realized that she really enjoyed developing and implementing projects, interventions and events as part of prevention measures and so, after training as a specialist in medical mindfulness interoception® and working as a course leader, she soon started working as a prevention specialist at the Zurich specialist centre for alcohol problems. There she planned, coordinated and organized training events, as well as lectures and coaching sessions, successfully acquired and created course concepts for companies and institutions and initiated projects.

SVEB certificate course instructor (now trainer): door opener for interesting jobs

After completing numerous training courses in the areas of counseling, discussion management, education, moderation and prevention over the past 10 years, Andrea Müller decided to acquire the SVEB Certificate Course Leader (now SVEB Certificate Instructor) at the Lernwerkstatt in Olten. She hopes to be able to work in a contemporary company or educational institution that wants to deal with the topics of conversation management, health promotion, addiction, crises, stress, relaxation, mindfulness, conflict, bullying, etc.

She sees herself as an enthusiastic adult educator and social worker who values creative freedom and scope for development. She can win over a wide variety of target groups with her extensive range of methods and consulting tools. She loves challenges, is versatile and adaptable.

Toni Schädler: From SVEB 1 certificate to instructor with federal certificate

In 2011, I started the SVEB 1 course as a course instructor (now trainer) at Lernwerkstatt Olten. I enjoyed the course so much that I quickly completed the other four modules and completed the entire course as an instructor with a federal certificate.

I would recommend that anyone who teaches should complete at least the first module of the SVEB course. It was very useful for my teaching. I found the ARIVA model and the methods for optimally designing flipcharts particularly valuable.

Since completing the SVEB 1 module and the course for trainers with a federal certificate, I have been able to significantly increase the positive feedback from my course participants. For us electricians, for example, it is clear in everyday life that there is a problem and a solution to this problem. On the course, I learned that you can find solutions in very different ways. This has also helped me a lot in my private life.

I really enjoyed the courses. The atmosphere among the participants and lecturers was always good, there was always a relaxed and constructive atmosphere. This meant we were able to learn well and always take something away with us. I was impressed by the whole concept of the Lernwerkstatt Olten. The LWO has various locations throughout German-speaking Switzerland and the training rooms are always close to the train stations, making them easy to reach by public transport. I also appreciated the fact that the folders are not so thick and are reduced to the essentials.

Katja Willeschek: I had the best course of my life at the Lernwerkstatt Olten!

Originally, I only wanted to acquire the "SVEB Certificate Course Leader" (now "SVEB Certificate Trainer") at the Lernwerkstatt. But after just a short time, I realized that the course gave me lots of new tips and ideas. Ultimately, my money has never been better invested than in this course.

With the SVEB certificate, you have significantly better chances on the job market because it is easier to obtain a teaching mandate at schools. In addition, the content taught helps you to plan and structure teaching units. The many practical tips are worth their weight in gold for challenging teaching situations. I now feel much more confident when I teach a course.

The concrete success is that I feel that I have generated additional added value for the course participants since I completed this course. My flipcharts are more professional than before and my course structure has a regularity that wasn't there before.

Before attending the individual training days, I thought that I was already very experienced in teaching. Nevertheless, during the SVEB training I kept learning new things and realized that there was still a lot of potential.

I recommend this course to anyone who would like to teach. In the SVEB 1 module, participants are really taught a proper craft. This course is also valuable for teachers or lecturers who have been teaching for several years.

Marco Werder: SVEB 1 Certificate - The basis for successful independence in adult education

Immediately after completing his apprenticeship as a chef, Marco Werder decided to do additional training with a commercial diploma, which helped him to get a job as an administrative manager in a metal construction technology company. Werder worked there for almost six years and at the same time completed further training to become a qualified businessman and technical businessman. After spending time abroad in Australia and New Zealand, a year as a financial accountant and another as a commercial all-rounder / management assistant, the now experienced Marco Werder, who was fluent in English, took up a position as Commercial Director / Chief Financial Officer (CFO) at an international sports and event marketing agency, where he remained for 21 years.

In-service training
During this time, Werder decided to have his skills certified with a further federally recognized qualification and so he completed further training to become a specialist in finance and accounting with a federal certificate, which he passed in 2005. In 2017, he moved to a metal construction company for around two years, where he worked as Head of Finance and then focused his attention on leading courses in finance and accounting. In 2018, Marco Werder also took part in further training for the SVEB 1 certificate at Lernwerkstatt Olten while working and even completed module 3 of the course to become a trainer with a federal certificate in April 2019.

The SVEB 1 certificate course and module 3 of the course for trainers with a federal certificate have helped him a great deal in his current role as a course instructor for further training in finance and accounting, finance and accounting and business administration NDS HF. "Without these modules, I wouldn't have managed to get into adult education," says Werder. The leap into self-employment
He achieved his goal of becoming self-employed in June 2019 and wants to have gained a foothold in adult education within a year. To achieve this, he wants to continue his intensive training in this area and is aiming for further training as an instructor with a federal certificate or as a coach. Or, as Werder says, both. After all, you never stop learning.

Slowly come to terms with the idea of retirement? Put your feet up and take it easy? That's not an option for Susanne Kiefer. Although she has been on the job market a few years longer than perhaps others, her skills and commitment are in no way inferior to those of her younger colleagues. Susanne Kiefer is a dynamic leader with incredible expertise, a passion for all things changeable and a great sense of humor.

It's never too late to continue your education

And so in 2021, at the age of 60, she decided to embark on further training again, namely the SVEB1 certificate for course leaders (now trainers). She had already gained experience as a course instructor and coach through a course management mandate for RAV and IV clients (job seekers) and through her self-employment as a systems therapist.

More extensive opportunities thanks to further training

Although Susanne Kiefer has been giving courses and working as a coach on and off since 2007, the SVEB1 course taught her a lot of new things. And so she also says: "I realized again how much I like being in groups of learners and taking on the leadership or moderation myself. This further training strengthens my desire to be active as a course leader and workshop provider in the field of organizational and team development."

New challenges await

With her positive attitude, her passion for group and change processes and her wide range of skills, she is looking for new mandates and challenges. She would like to continue providing support as a dynamic generalist in the social sector, specialist in restructuring and reorganization processes (troubleshooter), coach and organizational consultant as well as crisis expert and systems therapist.
