Therapeutic massage includes the most important massage methods for successful treatments in the context of alternative and complementary medicine. It combines classical massage, foot reflexology and manual lymphatic drainage. In training to become a therapeutic masseur/therapeutic masseuse, participants learn the methodological skills of the individual methods and how to combine them. As the body is connected via different systems, it is important for therapy to reach these individual systems and offer the client the best possible combination of methods for their complaints.

Therapeutic massage: training to practice an alternative medical method

Would you like to complete a massage training course as part of alternative medicine? In the therapeutic massage training course, participants learn various massage techniques. After completing the course, they will be able to offer classic massage, foot reflexology and manual lymphatic drainage as therapeutic methods. In order to be able to practice the therapeutic activity, medical basics are also part of the learning content of the massage training. The practice-oriented training for therapeutic massage comprises 740 attendance hours and 1090 learning hours in accordance with the EMR hour requirement. During this time, you will learn about patient safety, pharmacology, communication and health awareness. You will also need to be able to take a medical history and make a diagnosis in order to carry out therapeutic measures. The specialist knowledge in therapeutic massage is rounded off with hygiene, first aid, medical terminology, psychology and psychosomatics.

The aim of the massage training course is to enable graduates to meet the requirements of a massage practice and to enable them to practise therapeutic massage independently. As a massage therapist, graduates can offer classical massage in order to exert its healing effect on the arterial system and the musculature. As a therapeutic massage, foot reflexology can transfer regenerative forces to the corresponding organs via nerve points on the feet. As a decongestive measure, therapeutic massage therapists can use manual lymphatic drainage as a form of physical therapy.

Could training or further education in therapeutic massage be right for you? On the Swiss education platform Ausbildung-Weiterbildung.ch you will find suitable schools and offers. You can also order additional information documents there quickly and easily.

  • Diploma of the provider
  • Health insurance recognition

The final module examinations (classical massage, foot reflexology and manual lymphatic drainage) include a written, oral and practical part. This examination takes place on the last day of the last course of the respective module. After passing the final module examination, graduates receive a diploma that can be used for health insurance recognition (EMR registration).

The learning objectives of the Therapeutic Massage certificate course are as follows:

  • Basic training in medical and social science subjects
  • Understanding health
  • Ethics
  • Practice management
  • Specialist therapeutic training
    • Foot reflexology massage
    • Classic massage
    • Manual lymphatic drainage

The term "EMR therapeutic massage" training means a newly created training program and replaces the professional masseur. This two-year, part-time training course for therapeutic massage therapists (EMR method 33) offers an adult-oriented training program in a modular system. After training, the profession is practiced in health promotion, prevention and therapy for individuals. In most cases, they work in their own practice - employment in saunas, fitness and health centers and sports clubs is also possible.

The following persons are admitted to therapeutic masseur training:

  • Good German language skills - oral and written
  • human empathy
  • Sense of touch
  • Willingness to learn
  • Endurance

The Therapeutic Massage Therapist course comprises a total of 780 hours of classroom instruction as well as a three-hour oral and practical final examination. Depending on the pace of learning and the time available, the course takes approximately 2 years. Most courses can be attended as evening or day courses. In addition to the classroom time, you should expect to spend around 780 hours on self-study - depending on your learning technique and previous education. To be on the safe side, check with your training provider.

The treatment forms of foot reflexology, classic massage and manual lymphatic drainage can be used either individually or in combination to treat various health complaints:

  • Classical massage Massage: pressure and traction stimuli are applied to the tissue with the hands
  • Manual lymphatic drainage: a decongestive measure that uses certain grip techniques to stimulate the motor function of the lymph vessels, which facilitates the removal of excess tissue fluid (but without the complex physical decongestive therapy)
  • Foot reflexology: depending on where the sole of the foot is massaged by applying targeted pressure to reflex points, this has an effect on different parts of the body
