The structure of continuing education, further training for payroll experts varies depending on the training provider.

For example, a course includes the basics of HRM and personnel administration, payroll accounting and salary administration, social insurance, withholding tax and international salary management, as well as employment law.

The contents of another course to become a payroll specialist are: Social insurance, law and wages, wage processing, wage policy and wage forms, international salary management, cross-border social insurance, withholding tax, payroll accounting and auditing.

A specific degree is not required for the UAS continuing education, further training CAS Payroll Experts, but a university degree in any field of study and at least three years of professional experience. Persons without a university degree can also be admitted to the UAS postgraduate course by the course management if they have the appropriate qualifications, such as a federal diploma from an AFPE or CHE.

After completing targeted continuing education, further training in this area, payroll experts are able to use their existing, up-to-date specialist knowledge and skills to work in personnel administration and payroll administration, handle the salary process, implement provisions on labor law and social security law, make salary postings and carry out salary processing processes throughout the year.

The CAS Payroll Experts certificate course at a University of Applied Sciences often consists of the following content:

• The basics of payroll accounting (e.g. Swiss payroll accounting system, wage types, wage components, continued payment of wages, working time models and their impact on payroll accounting)
• Social insurance and legal framework (e.g. AHV, IV, EO, ALV, BVG, UVG, family allowances, withholding tax / international tax issues, correct accounting of accident and sickness absences)
• International Payroll & Expat Payroll (including secondment, residence permits, social security agreements, international standards and country-specific differences)
• Employment law and data protection (e.g. wage-related aspects of employment law, obligations when dealing with sensitive personnel data)
• Digitalization & payroll systems (e.g. tools & software solutions for payroll, automation of payroll processes)
• Controlling, audits & reporting (e.g. key figures and benchmarking, preparation for internal and external audits, interfaces to financial accounting and HR)
