Tipps und Entscheidungshilfen für die Ausbildungswahl

There is a whole range of interesting professions in agriculture, making it an interesting field of activity for people with a wide variety of skills and qualifications. In addition to traditional apprenticeships, for example as an agronomist, there are also an increasing number of further education courses and even degree courses. Studying to become an agronomist is one such course in the field of agriculture that offers graduates a varied and promising field of work. As important contacts, advisors, researchers and reporters, bachelors in agronomy act as experts in agriculture.

They support farmers with their questions about the future of their business, are responsible for breeding new plants and researching better feeding methods. In addition, agronomists are involved in improving animal genetics, working on opening up new markets and informing the public about all the important innovations in agriculture. As this spectrum is very wide-ranging, each student chooses a specialization during their studies and makes it their focus. The Bachelor's degree course in Agronomy currently offers a choice of specializations in equine science, agricultural economics, livestock science, international agriculture and plant science. Subject to change at any time.

Anyone interested in this profession as an agronomist is therefore guaranteed a wide range of challenges and variety. However, certain requirements must be met in order to be admitted to a degree course. Always clarify admissions in detail with the respective school and find out at an early stage whether you may have to complete a pre-study internship, which can take up to a year. You can obtain more detailed information about admission requirements, the structure of the agronomy course, specializations that can be chosen and all other important information directly from the respective agricultural schools, which you can easily contact here via the Swiss education portal.

Questions and answers

Continuing education, further training as an agronomist can be completed either full-time or part-time. In the case of part-time continuing education, further training is extended by one year and takes three years, for example to become an agronomist CHE. Full-time training therefore takes two years. The same applies to studying to become an agricultural technician CHE. A Bachelor's degree course is usually exclusively full-time, which means that it is rarely possible to continue working, and if it is, then to a very limited extent. Talk to the respective educational institutions about the individual training models for agronomists and the possibilities of completing them alongside your job if this is your wish.
Not all schools require people applying to train as an agronomist, for example as an agro-businessman or agro-businesswoman CHE, to be employed in the agricultural industry during continuing education, further training. Some schools expect at least 50% employment in this sector, but you should always check this with the relevant educational institutions in individual cases. However, at least three years of basic training in agriculture or a related sector and at least one additional year of professional experience are mandatory.
The activities of agronomists are very varied and are constantly adapting to changing market and competitive conditions, as well as to regulations and environmental conditions. Environmentally conscious action and appropriate production and distribution are fundamental prerequisites for the agricultural industry, which has also become increasingly evident in consumer behavior in recent years. Resource-oriented management should therefore be the top priority for all producers, but also for distribution and sales centers, as well as for trade in general. An agronomist should therefore be committed and innovative in order to survive on the market. However, the tasks of these professionals depend not least on their education and continuing education, further training, which should have provided them with specific commercial and agronomic skills. For example, an agronomist CHE works in business management in the agricultural trade, in agricultural cooperatives, trading companies, organizations and businesses, but also in administration. They are responsible for the purchase and sale of agricultural goods, for market analyses and marketing measures, for pricing policy and compliance with laws and regulations. An agronomist is also responsible for organizing transport and storage, as well as adhering to deadlines and safety regulations, accounting and controlling tasks.
