Exercise and fitness instructors work in fitness centers, health centers, wellness and leisure facilities, hotels, etc. Their clients are groups who come for fitness classes or guided training sequences, and individuals of all ages with various training goals: Promoting and maintaining strength, flexibility, relaxation and health in general. They put together training programs for groups and lead the training. They supervise individual customers as they train independently on the equipment, ensure that the exercises are performed correctly and are available to answer any questions.
In addition to training support, individual customer care is an important task: they talk to new customers to clarify their needs and goals and enquire about their physical condition as well as any limitations and difficulties. Based on this information, they put together an individual training plan. They explain this plan, demonstrate each exercise and practise the routine with the new customer. They observe whether the training plan corresponds to the actual possibilities or whether the type or intensity of the exercises need to be adjusted.
Advertising and sales round off the job description: fitness trainers explain the health benefits of regular training and present their offers such as subscriptions, memberships or special courses to customers. In some fitness centers, they also sell products such as sportswear or nutritional supplements.
