MTRA training: the path to becoming a radiology specialist HF

After completing their MTRA training, radiology specialists work in clinics, hospitals and radiology facilities, whereby their activities can be divided into three main areas:

  1. In the field of diagnostic radiology, radiology specialists take X-ray images and perform X-ray examinations of organs, bones, nerve cords and vessels, using other techniques such as magnetic resonance imaging, computed tomography and radiography in addition to conventional X-ray images.
  2. Radiology specialists working in the field of radiation oncology operate state-of-the-art equipment during radiation treatments, always adhering to the treatment plan prescribed by the oncology specialists.
  3. Radiology specialists also work in the field of nuclear medicine. They are responsible for the preparation and administration of controlled and coordinated radioactive substances, which then accumulate in the patient's body in specific organs. The process and the behavior of the substances in the body are observed using specially developed measuring devices.

During the MTRA training course, participants learn to comply with radiation protection guidelines and to always be committed to the safety of patients and the environment. The course teaches comprehensive skills in responsible and empathetic treatment of patients and in the professional handling of the numerous radiology measuring devices and techniques.

Questions and answers

As a rule, prospective students are required to have completed at least three years of basic vocational training (EFZ), preferably as a care specialist EFZ, as a health specialist EFZ or as a medical practice assistant, or a technical, secondary school or vocational baccalaureate or an equivalent qualification. In addition, you must pass the aptitude test, which, depending on the higher technical college, may include an aptitude test, an aptitude internship, a dossier and an aptitude interview. The respective universities of applied sciences will inform you about the individual admission procedures.

MTRA training is a full-time course of study and lasts three years.

Unlike in German-speaking Switzerland, MTRA training in French-speaking Switzerland does not take place at universities of applied sciences, but as a bachelor's degree course at a university of applied sciences.

As MTRA training at higher technical colleges is very practice-oriented, internships and orientation weeks also take place. The extent to which these take place can vary from school to school.

It is best to contact the school of your choice straight away.

After completing MTRA training at a higher technical college, graduates are awarded the protected title "dipl. Radiologiefachfrau HF" or "dipl. Radiologiefachmann HF".

During their MTRA training, radiology students acquire extensive knowledge and skills to be able to care for, treat and monitor sick, injured, disabled and healthy patients in hospitals and radiology institutes.
This includes radiation oncology, which includes radiotherapy and tumor radiation planning, where they treat patients over a period of several weeks according to the doctor's instructions. On the other hand, prospective radiology specialists HF acquire knowledge of diagnostic radiology, in which they are responsible for taking X-ray images of nerve tracts, blood vessels, bones and internal organs. In addition to conventional X-ray technology, they are also familiar with digital radiography, computer tomography and magnetic resonance imaging. Furthermore, MTRA students are trained in nuclear medicine, in which they prepare radioactive substances in the laboratory and administer them to patients in very small quantities, using special measuring devices to visualize the position, size and function of the diseased organ. They also study basic scientific subjects such as anatomy, pathology, psychology, medical informatics, psychosociology, radiological physics and radiation protection.
