Can the training to become a qualified nursing specialist be shortened?
Federal VET Diploma healthcare specialists have the opportunity to complete their studies at a College of Higher Education to become a Federal VET Diploma nursing specialist within just two years.
What nursing activities can a CHE nursing specialist perform?
A CHE nursing specialist can carry out the following nursing activities:
- build a trusting relationship with patients and support them in taking responsibility for their health and preventing illnesses
- define care goals and plan care measures with patients or their relatives
- carry out planned care measures, such as assistance with personal hygiene, in a professional manner
- Regularly check the effect of the care measures and the condition of the patients, document these and adapt the care planning accordingly
- support patients in achieving and maintaining independence and the best possible quality of life
- administer medication, administer infusions, take blood samples or apply bandages as ordered by a doctor
- react appropriately to unforeseen situations (e.g. infections or allergic reactions), recognize emergency situations and initiate life-sustaining measures
- respect the privacy of patients and maintain confidentiality
Do I need a specific apprenticeship qualification to train as a qualified nursing specialist?
In order to be admitted to the CHE Nursing Diploma course, prospective students must have either a Specialized School Certificate, a Baccalaureate or a Federal Diploma of Vocational Education and Training (Vocational Education and Training). The industry and profession in which this Federal VET Diploma was obtained is irrelevant for admission to the CHE course.
How long does training to become a CHE nursing specialist take?
Full-time training to become a CHE nursing specialist takes three years at most schools.
In the case of continuing education, further training, the duration of the training is extended accordingly, usually to around four years.
Healthcare assistants Federal VET Diploma (i.e. FaGe's) can usually aim for a shortened, two-year training course, which is also part-time.
What communication and administrative activities are possible after the CHE nursing specialist training?
The following communicative and administrative activities are possible after the CHE nursing specialist training:
- Conducting discussions with patients and their relatives to record symptoms such as pain or to obtain information about living conditions so that discharge from hospital can be planned.
- regular meetings with doctors, physiotherapists, dieticians and other healthcare professionals about the patient's state of health and treatment plan
- plan the tasks of the nursing staff depending on the place of work, taking into account the available resources and the needs of the patients
- coordinate the treatment of patients in a team made up of various healthcare professionals
- organize discharge home or transfer to a rehabilitation clinic or a retirement and nursing home
- document the care measures carried out, record observations and adapt the care plan
- support students or trainees during their internship

In which areas are nursing specialists active?

Depending on the place of employment, a qualified nursing specialist CHE looks after and cares for people of very different ages, backgrounds and illnesses. They care for the elderly as well as children with long-term illnesses, adolescents with mental or somatic illnesses, women in childbed or adults in acute care.
