England offers a wide range of language courses for adults

Without English language skills, you can no longer have a career in many professions these days. Whether in tourism, foreign trade, the IT sector, the pharmaceutical industry or medical technology, English language skills are indispensable from a certain position onwards, especially for specialists and managers. Knowledge of English does not open all doors per se, but in many cases it is a basic requirement for getting ahead professionally and being able to take up interesting positions and professions.

However, it is not always so easy for adults to improve their language skills in everyday working life. The working days are far too long, the journey to a language school in the city far too stressful and the motivation to cram English vocabulary at the weekend far too low. Learning English should be fun and not seem like an additional burden. So why not simply combine an English course with a little vacation and turn it into a language study trip to England?

A language study trip to England for adults: the advantages are obvious

When you think of vacations, you think of relaxation, time out and variety. A different place where everyday life doesn't catch up with you and you can simply do what you like to do. Whether it's sleeping in or hiking, sailing or sightseeing. And that's exactly what adults can do on a language study trip to England. All this and so much more. And all while learning a new language or improving your existing language skills. During the mornings and possibly early afternoons, you attend a language course that is tailored to your needs, language level and objectives and have the rest of the day and the whole weekend to use what you have learned directly. Whether it's shopping or guided city tours, an organized excursion or a beach party, during a language study trip in England you will not only use English during lessons, but almost constantly.

And that's a good thing. Because this is the only way to consolidate what you have learned in class, the only way to gain a routine in the language and overcome any fear of speaking. Over time, you will no longer even notice that you only ever hear, read and speak English. You will immerse yourself completely in the language and make further linguistic progress from day to day, which will soon enable you to communicate well with others.

How long should the language study trip last?

If you really want to improve your language skills, it is advisable to attend a language course for as long as possible during a language study trip to England. Lessons lasting just one week are possible, but are unlikely to be of much use to you. The time is simply too short for that. To raise your language level from A2 to B1, for example, you will need at least four weeks of language lessons if you are a very intensive learner. Otherwise, at least six weeks is more realistic, although neither figure is a promise. Depending on how quickly you learn and are prepared to use what you have learned in your free time, how many lessons your language course comprises, whether you do your homework or prefer to spend time with German speakers after class, apart from all these and many other factors, it may depend on how much linguistic progress you make in the time available to you during a language study trip to England and how quickly you can reach a higher language level.

A year of language study for adults is an interesting alternative

If you don't just want to use your vacation days for a language course in England, but want to massively improve your language skills, you can also book much more comprehensive language courses at language schools throughout the country, which can last up to a year. During this time, you will make English your second mother tongue and benefit from all the experience and new contacts you have made when you return to Switzerland. For your career, such a language stay in England with a long-term course is a real enrichment, because it not only certifies your language skills, but also your independence, motivation, discipline, open-mindedness and courage. After all, it's not that easy to turn your back on your home country for 6 months, 9 months or even a whole year and embark on a completely new life.

Popular variants or supplements to long-term courses are combinations of language course and internship/volunteering or, for the younger ones, language course and demipair. Language travel providers will be happy to help you find a job if they offer these programs.

Take your employer into account

Whether for a language course in England lasting several weeks or a year abroad, if you are permanently employed, a discussion with your employer is sensible or even necessary. Discuss your plans and options with your line manager or supervisor. Not every company and every position will want or allow longer periods of absence, so it is important to clarify this at an early stage.

In many cases, your employer will finance part of your stay if language skills are required for your employment or if they are considering you for another position. It is therefore quite possible that your language course and any language examinations will be paid for, but you will have to pay for your accommodation, travel and incidental costs yourself. Clarify this point as well, because improving your language skills can also be a real benefit for your company, which is worth investing in.

Language diplomas prove the language level

Your employer may require you to complete your language course with an exam during your language study trip to England in order to be able to prove your skills with a language diploma. Or perhaps you want to obtain an English diploma on your own initiative in order to qualify for a new job. Whatever the reason, a language course for adults in England offers you the ideal conditions for this. There are several language diplomas to choose from, which you can prepare for at one of the country's many language schools. Particularly popular are the Cambridge diplomas such as the Cambridge English A2 Key (KET), the B1 Preliminary (PET), the B2 First (FCE), the C1 Advanced (CAE) or the C2 Proficiency (CPE), which certifies that you are a native speaker and for which you can of course not only prepare at a language school in Cambridge.

However, you don't necessarily have to crown your language study trip to England with a Cambridge certificate. The globally recognized language exams TOEFL, TOEIC, IELTS and GMAT can also be taken at many language schools.

If you want to obtain a language diploma, you need to attend a suitable language course that teaches you exactly the skills you need to pass the language exam. It should be noted that in most cases the course duration is precisely defined and the timing of the courses is based on the respective official exam dates.

Language study trip to England for adults: intensive, standard or summer course?

However, not everyone wants to finish their language course with a language certificate. For many language students, it is perfectly sufficient to simply improve their language skills. But which course should you choose? What are the differences and are the names of the individual courses the same at every language school in England?

Standard courses are, as the name suggests, standard in every language school. These are courses for adults, for example, where you usually only attend lessons in the mornings during your language study trip to England and have the afternoon free. Accordingly, the lessons are usually around 20-26 lessons per week, whereby it is important to pay attention to the duration of the individual lessons. In some schools, a lesson lasts 40 minutes, in others up to 60 minutes. This difference in the duration of the lessons can quickly lead to errors regarding the actual teaching time. For example, a course consisting of 25 lessons does not necessarily have to have more course time than a course with 20 weekly lessons. You should therefore pay attention to this information for all language courses!

Intensive courses are available for those who are not satisfied with just learning English in the mornings and would like to study the language more intensively. These usually comprise two to three more lessons per day and aim to maximize learning success. However, intensive language courses naturally have less free time available. But here too, late afternoons and weekends are of course free of lessons, so there should still be enough time to enjoy a relaxed language study trip in England, go on excursions, explore the surrounding area or simply lie on the beach or by the river. If you would like more, some language schools also offer summer courses or courses with a similar name, which usually comprise 15 to a maximum of 20 weekly lessons. Private lessons or the "at the teacher's home" option are also offered in many places.

Language stay for adults: 18+, 25+, 30+, 50+, 60+

No matter what stage of life you are at, a language study trip to England is also suitable for adults! Gone are the days when only pupils and students gained experience abroad. Nowadays, people in their late forties go abroad for a few weeks after their children have completed their apprenticeship and people in their mid-thirties acquire important language skills for their second career. Senior citizens also combine their vacations with language courses in England or other countries. They learn English so that they can communicate better during their travels or simply because they enjoy expanding and using their skills even at an advanced age.

But of course you don't have to be retired to attend a language school in England. Special language courses are also offered for the 50+ generation, as well as for 25+ or 30+. Depending on age, the courses are structured slightly differently, different topics are covered and the leisure activities are designed accordingly. In addition, there are often differences in the facilities and, above all, the location of the accommodation. After all, it is rarely just as important for the 60+ generation to live in the middle of the party mile as it is for the 18+ target group. So if you would like to learn English with people of the same age and enjoy an attractive range of leisure activities, you should also consider the target group when choosing a suitable language course.
