Occupational health and safety - ASGS training - What are the disadvantages?

Safety officers (SiBe) and coordinators for occupational safety (KOPAS) take care of safety in the company and shape its safety culture. They introduce new employees to occupational safety, health protection and health promotion. They know the basics of safety concepts, workplace health promotion and the human factor. Occupational health and safety - ASGS training gives graduates the necessary tools for these tasks, but may also have one or two disadvantages. Those who are aware of these can better assess whether this type of training is the right choice.

The main disadvantages of occupational health and safety - ASGS training are:

  1. If you would like to obtain an occupational health and safety certificate and not just a course certificate, some training providers offer this by means of a voluntary examination or practical work. However, this is associated with additional costs.
  2. With a short basic course, you usually only reach the first level of activity as a health and safety officer. This would be the Coordination Person for Occupational Safety (KOPAS). The scope of the training depends on the industry and therefore also the scope of the safety manuals and checklists provided. On the one hand, you are therefore dependent on how comprehensively the industry provides knowledge, on the other hand, the activity can only be carried out in the corresponding industry sector. Other job levels would also be: Persons with basic knowledge of occupational safety, safety assistants (SiAs) and occupational safety specialists (ASA). These job levels in the field of occupational safety and health protection are carried out by SUVA or on its basis and are not only based on the professional associations with ASGS industry solutions.
  3. It is not always easy for specialists with a basic knowledge of ASGS to implement safety concepts and protective measures with employees and management. It takes persuasion to win over employees or colleagues in the team for safety issues. Occupational health and safety measures are not popular with all employees and are usually associated with enormous costs for management. Their knowledge is based on brief basic training.
  4. The work is usually carried out alongside the normal job. The regular checks, inspections and maintaining contact with the responsible body of the inter-company ASGS solution are very responsible and time-consuming. Depending on the importance of safety in the company, this can be taken into account to a greater or lesser extent.
  5. If you want to work as a health and safety officer or KOPAS in the field of occupational health and safety, you have to be consistent, persistent and assertive. This also includes acting in difficult situations.

Anyone wishing to acquire knowledge of the legal foundations and regulations of occupational safety and health protection, systematic risk assessment and the content and structure of a company safety system is well advised to take the Occupational Safety and Health Protection - ASGS training course. Dealing with the psychological aspects and causes of risky behavior can also be exciting. Further training such as the Federal Professional Examination (AFPE) and the Advanced Federal Professional Examination (AFPE) offer great development opportunities in this area.
