Building biology training - organic living and well-being

The field of building biology is booming. This is because healthy, organic products are becoming increasingly popular. Nowadays, more and more people want products with good quality and naturalness. But this desire is not limited to food or everyday objects. Today, people want to live organically and do their bit to ensure that raw materials are used in a sustainable and environmentally conscious way. When constructing buildings, far more factors must now be taken into account than was previously the case in order to ensure organic living. Building biology deals with the implementation of healthy buildings.

Building biologists are familiar with the various measures that can be taken to build a biological home. A specialist in building biology is familiar with biological construction methods and provides expert advice to builders and architects. Do you already have professional experience in the construction industry and would you like to continue your education? Complete training or further training in the field of building biology and make an interesting contribution to the environment. The Building Biology (BP) course prepares you for the federal professional examination and enables you to provide many people with a healthy home.

The training course lasts one and a half to three years. In order to be admitted to the professional examination, a professional qualification in the construction industry and two years of professional experience are required. Alternatively, if you have completed an apprenticeship in another sector and have four years of professional experience in the construction industry, you can take the exam. In the case of other previous training, you must have at least six years' experience in the industry and at least five building biology or building ecology projects. In addition, all required modules must be passed. These modules are acquired in courses and consist of

Questions and answers

As the continuing education, further training in Building Biology is an examination preparation course for the Federal Professional Examination, the content of the schools is based on the examination regulations and the tested subjects described therein. This means that you will work on the following modules during your continuing education, further training in building biology FPE:
  • Building biology constructions (acoustics, heat balance and vapor diffusion)
  • Health (indoor climate)
  • Architecture (architectural design and building biology)
  • Sustainability

  • House biography and biodiversity
  • Water balance and electro-biology

Case studies, excursions and a preliminary course in building physics (for people with no previous knowledge) are also on the timetable, so that you will acquire a wealth of skills in building biology within this one year.

After training as a building biologist with a Federal Diploma of Higher Education, the employment relationship usually changes in the medium term. Building biologists work as owners or employees of architecture, planning, engineering or consulting firms. However, they may also be employed by specialist agencies or authorities such as building authorities. Jobs can also be found in industry and commerce, with environmental and development organizations, in research and in educational institutions.

As the course in Building Biology consists of 10 modules, which can be attended independently of each other, you can join the continuing education, further training course at any time. This means, for example, that you can start with module 5 in mid-March and attend all the other 9 modules within the next 12 months. As courses take place every month, you can therefore also start every month. You are free to choose your start date and the final federal examination can also be postponed by up to two years.
The specialist training in building biology consists of 10 independent modules, each with one to three attendance dates. These modules have precisely defined dates, which are spread over the whole year, so that it is not possible to complete the continuing education, further training as a building biologist FPE in less than a year.
In order to be admitted to the Federal Professional Examination (FPE) in Building Biology, you must have passed all the required modules or have a certificate of equivalence and have professional experience in the construction industry. This is 2 years of professional experience with an apprenticeship in the construction industry, 4 years with another apprenticeship and at least 6 years of professional experience in the construction industry as well as proof of 5 implemented projects in building ecology if you have other previous training. The schools for prospective building biologists with a federal certificate will also inform you about the admission requirements.

After training in building biology, you will carry out the following activities:

  • Accompany construction or renovation processes
  • Assess the building site
  • Commissioning analyses
  • Developing material concepts according to building biology principles
  • Select building materials
  • Incorporate the client's specifications and wishes into the considerations
  • Development of proposed solutions and cost overviews
  • Create guidelines for the craftsmen
  • Monitoring the implementation of building biology measures on the construction site
  • Providing companies and individuals with comprehensive advice on sustainable construction and refurbishment

The Federal Professional Examination is a first specialization after the Federal Diploma of Vocational Education and Training and serves to deepen your professional knowledge. It is aimed at a middle management function and enables you to take on more demanding tasks and train apprentices than is possible with a Federal VET Diploma. The Building Biology course is more scientifically oriented, meaning it is more theoretical and less practical. It is therefore aimed more at management positions with a high level of responsibility.
