What does a nature educator do?
Working with children
Nature educators lead forest play groups and all kinds of children's groups that spend time in nature. They often work in a (more traditional) pedagogical main job and also offer nature groups on behalf of communities and organizations. Their tasks include
- To make adventure spaces accessible to the children, where they can playfully come into contact with nature, try out natural materials and go on an adventurous journey of discovery.
- Planning the activities, organizing the material, preparing the locations and the schedule of the meetings.
- To show children how to behave responsibly and respectfully towards nature so that they can learn by imitation.
Working with adults
Nature and wilderness educators mainly work in adult education as coaches, trainers or leaders of nature experience seminars. They usually work independently.
- They plan and design courses, explore suitable places to stay, obtain the necessary permits, organize sleeping facilities and the necessary equipment and catering.
- During the seminars, they provide the daily structure and topics, give theoretical input, guide the practical exercises and support the participants.
- In addition to the courses, they advertise their seminars and training courses, answer inquiries from interested parties and take care of administrative and organizational tasks.
