Chef de Bar: The competent service behind the bar

As a chef de bar, you do the same work as the bartender, the barman or the barmaid. The bar is a meeting place for many people. As a bartender, you should give a competent and courteous impression and advise guests on their choice of drinks, wines, beers and other spirits. It is a must to know all the drinks on offer well and to be able to mix them quickly. Bar managers are often also there to guide the other bartenders.

As a bartender, you should be able to keep a cool head in any situation and work with concentration even in hectic and noisy situations. You will also be responsible for restocking the refrigerated shelves after the bar closes and cleaning the bar during the evening. Accounting for takings is often part of the Chef de Bar's remit. So you should also have a certain flair for figures.

Questions and answers

To become a chef de bar, you need above all experience, skill and comprehensive knowledge in a wide variety of areas, such as product knowledge, communication, hygiene regulations, guest service, mise en place, your own creations and much more. Comprehensive training is therefore the easiest and safest way to become a bar manager. An apprenticeship as a restaurant specialist with subsequent professional experience and continuing education, further training as a restaurant manager are the best prerequisites for this job. If you have other training, special professional bar courses can be the ideal introduction to the world of bartending. Further seminars on a wide range of topics, such as show mixing or wine knowledge, round off your profile.

Without professional experience as a bartender, you will find it very difficult to find employment as a chef de bar, even after thorough training. However, you can attend a course to become a bar professional even without bar experience and work your way up to head bartender after some time.

A course to become a chef de bar or a professional bar course is not a federally recognized continuing education, further training, but an internal course that awards you the diploma of the corresponding bar school.

A course that prepares you for a job as a chef de bar is not a lengthy continuing education, further training course lasting several months or more, but is usually a seminar that lasts no longer than five days. Further training courses for experienced bartenders are usually even shorter and can therefore be conveniently attended at the same time as bartending.
