Housekeeping is an important part of every large household and family home, and without its professionalism, serious complications can quickly arise. This is why highly trained housekeeping staff are indispensable in hospitals, hotels and nursing homes, guesthouses, youth hostels, restaurants and children's facilities.

Entry into housekeeping often takes place via training as a hotel housekeeping specialist (EFZ) (former designation: housekeeping specialist), which provides comprehensive knowledge and skills in a wide range of housekeeping areas. For example, a housekeeping specialist learns everything necessary in the fields of housekeeping and nutrition, gastronomy, garden use, guest care, equipment handling and cleaning. After completing an apprenticeship as a housekeeping specialist Federal VET Diploma, it is advisable to work for a few years before continuing your specific training, for example with courses, training programs or federal examinations. Federal Professional Examinations (FPE) are possible, for example, to become a hotel housekeeping manager with a Federal Diploma of Higher Education, a building cleaning specialist with a Federal Diploma of Higher Education, a maintenance manager with a Federal Diploma of Higher Education, a farmer's household manager with a Federal Diploma of Higher Education or a household manager with a Federal Diploma of Higher Education. It is also possible to attend a College of Higher Education, for example to become a certified hotelier-restaurateur CHE or a certified operations manager in facility management, as well as Bachelor's degree courses, for example in facility management (only with a Matura).

Federal VET Diploma housekeeping specialists are responsible for welcoming, advising and serving customers, residents and patients, organizing and running events, setting and decorating tables and buffets and carrying out service work. Federal VET Diploma housekeeping specialists clean rooms and facilities, prepare them and look after the plants, prepare simple meals, create menus, distribute the food and are responsible for organizing the washing up. A Federal VET Diploma housekeeping specialist also takes care of laundry cleaning and laundry supplies as well as various administrative tasks.

As a housekeeping specialist with a Federal Diploma of Vocational Education and Training (VET Diploma), you will be employed in hospitals, care homes, hotels, restaurants or (large) family households.

They often work in a team and in contact with guests, residents or patients. They are responsible for preparing and serving simple dishes, clearing and washing up, service and organization, as well as helping with events, laundry care including washing, drying, ironing, folding and supplying. In addition, a hotel housekeeping specialist carries out maintenance cleaning, special and basic cleaning and adheres to hygiene regulations. The tasks of housekeeping specialists also include flower care, interior design and keeping the rooms tidy, as well as instructing non-specialist staff and various administrative tasks such as preparing accounts, placing orders, warehousing and office work.

Further training opportunities are available for female hotel housekeeping specialists Federal Vocational Baccalaureate or male hotel housekeeping specialists Federal Vocational Baccalaureate (formerly housekeeping specialists Federal Vocational Diploma) depending on interest and qualification (with or without Federal Vocational Baccalaureate).
