What are the tasks of a public relations specialist in practice?

As a "PR specialist", you perform key tasks in a PR agency or in the communications department of your organization. You know the importance of communication as a success factor for the company. You are responsible for the planning and implementation of communication projects.

The most important facts in brief

The PR manager appreciates the planning and organizational skills of the public relations specialist. He/she becomes an indispensable discussion partner for him/her. They are required to contribute their practical know-how as early as the development of communication strategies. They organize media conferences and other events, accompany the production of brochures, customer newspapers or audiovisual media. They place orders with internal and external partners, such as graphic designers and suppliers. Researching, planning and implementing are further challenges for PR specialists. Keeping costs and deadlines under control is just as much a part of their job as quality and success control. The technical and editorial skills of public relations specialists with a federal certificate make a decisive contribution to the success of PR projects.

Training objectives

In the "PR Specialist" course, you will acquire the ability to understand the function and importance of PR as part of integrated corporate communication, to contribute to the development of PR strategies, to independently develop and implement PR sub-concepts, to plan PR measures independently and to manage and monitor their implementation.

  • PR tools and methods of internal and external communication: Corporate identity, corporate design, corporate publishing, production of print media, conceptual aspects of corporate communication, production of audiovisual media, internet and intranet, organization of PR events, budgeting and success control of PR measures, paid distribution of PR messages, advertising, project management.
  • Media relations: journalism and PR, media landscape in Switzerland, media law, organization of media conferences
  • Writing and editing: Language as a PR tool, language of the media, editing, editorial concept
  • Concept work: Creating and presenting a PR concept in groups

Nach der PR-Fachmann Ausbildung gibt es folgende Weiterentwicklungsmöglichkeiten:

  • Lehrgänge an privaten Fachschulen, höheren Fachschulen und Fachhochschulen
  • Höhere Fachprüfung (HFP) als PR-Berater/in mit eidgenössischem Diplom
  • Fachhochschule z.B. Bachelor of Arts (FH) in Kommunikation, Vertiefungsrichtung Journalismus/Organisationskommunikation

PR-Fachleute arbeiten in Kommunikationsabteilungen von Unternehmen, Institutionen, Non-Profit-Organisationen, Behörden oder in PR-Agenturen. Gut ausgebildete PR-Fachleute sind auf dem Markt sehr gefragt, denn unabhängig von Branche und Unternehmensgrösse geht es immer um den Dialog mit Menschen. Vor allem in Agenturen oder grösseren Unternehmen kann die Arbeitsbelastung zeitweise sehr hoch sein, zum Beispiel im Umfeld von Events oder Kampagnen.

Eine PR-Fachfrau eidg. Fachausweis übt folgende Tätigkeiten aus:

  • Bei PR-Fachleuten laufen die Fäden für die Planung und Umsetzung von Kommunikationsprojekten zusammen.
  • Sie übernehmen in Absprache mit der Geschäftsleitung teilweise auch selbständig Kommunikationsaufgaben.
  • Sie verfassen und redigieren redaktionelle Beiträge für Kunden- und Mitarbeiterzeitungen, Medienmitteilungen sowie Texte für digitale Medien und Social Media.
  • Sie verfassen Texte für Geschäftsberichte, Imagebroschüren oder Informationsflyer.
  • Sie koordinieren die Gestaltung und Produktion dieser Instrumente.
  • Sie stehen im ständigen Dialog mit internen und externen Fachleuten aus den Bereichen Gestaltung und Produktion sowie mit den relevanten Dialoggruppen wie Kunden, Medien, Mitarbeitenden etc.
  • Sie übernehmen Teile der Medienarbeit wie die Organisation von Medienkonferenzen, verfassen Medienmitteilungen und sind für die professionelle Kommunikation mit Medienschaffenden verantwortlich.
  • Sie wirken mit bei der Planung, Organisation und Durchführung von Anlässen wie Firmenjubiläen, Eröffnungsapéros, Tagen der offenen Tür usw.
  • Sie sind für die einwandfreie kaufmännische Abwicklung der Aufträge verantwortlich.
  • Sie führen laufend Kosten-, Termin- und Qualitätskontrollen bei Projekten durch.

In der PR-Fachfrau-Ausbildung lernt man folgendes:

  • Grundlagen in Ethik, Recht, Volks-/Betriebswirtschaft und Gesellschaft
  • Konzeptionelle und strategische Grundlagen

  • Content: Verfassen und Redigieren

In order to be admitted to the Federal Professional Examination Public Relations Specialist (FPE), the following requirements must be met:

  • Education:
    • Federal Diploma of Vocational Education and Training in Business Administration
    • Diploma from a state-recognized commercial college
    • Diploma from a state-recognized, at least 3-year Specialized School
    • Matura certificate (all types, including Federal Vocational Baccalaureate)
    • Diploma from a state-recognized College of Higher Education, University of Applied Sciences or Universities
    • Specialist certificate as a communications specialist, marketing specialist, sales specialist or direct marketing specialist
  • Professional experience:
    • 2 years of professional experience (PR, corporate communications, marketing communications, marketing, active sales, direct marketing or journalism)

After passing the Public Relations Specialist Federal Professional Examination (FPE), graduates are awarded the qualification: "PR Specialist with Federal Certificate of Competence" or "PR Specialist with Federal Certificate of Competence".
