TCM therapists: What does their everyday work look like?
Activity
TCM naturopaths treat people according to the teachings and with the means and methods of Traditional Chinese Medicine (TCM) and thus also support them in activating their self-healing powers.
At the start of treatment, they conduct a detailed anamnesis interview and examine the patient using TCM diagnostic methods: pulse diagnosis, tongue diagnosis, observation. In addition to complaints and symptoms of illness, sleeping, eating and working habits or questions about the relationship environment are also discussed. The evaluation leads to a diagnosis, which is used to determine the appropriate treatment methods. The TCM therapist can use acupuncture, Tuina massage or cupping to release energy blockages and reactivate the flow of energy. Herbal applications are used to stimulate the self-regulating and self-healing powers from within and without. A change in diet and lifestyle can support the healing or alleviation of symptoms in the long term.
In addition to the curative practice work, there are a number of administrative and practical tasks, such as maintaining the practice premises, marketing and client acquisition, treatment documentation, bookkeeping, etc. A considerable amount of working time may be spent looking for appointments, issuing health insurance certificates, answering e-mails, etc. When working as an employee, some of these tasks are eliminated. This is where the exchange in interdisciplinary teams becomes more important.
Work opportunities
Since 2015, there has been a federal qualification in alternative medicine in Switzerland: by passing the Advanced Federal Professional Examination (AFPE), the title of "Naturopath with a federal diploma" can be obtained in the fields of TCM, TEN (Traditional European Naturopathy), Ayurvedic medicine or homeopathy.
TCM naturopaths can run their own practice, be part of a group practice or work in clinics, rehabilitation centers or spa hotels. In most Swiss cantons, however, they need a license to practice in order to run their own practice - and in most cantons, they need a federal diploma as a naturopath in order to obtain a cantonal license to practice.
